Student Life and Leadership Development

Our mission is: To develop engaged leaders with a lifelong commitment to diversity, integrity and social responsibility.

The Student Life and Leadership Development Office serves as a complement to the academic mission of the and enhances the overall educational experience of students through development of and participation in social, cultural, intellectual, recreational and governance programs. Activities such as Fall Fest, leadership workshops and student organizations help to get students involved in the university and develop skills. For more information on clubs and organizations see the list following. If you don't find one that fits your interests, call the Student Life and Leadership Development Office for information on starting a new student group.

In addition to leadership development and other involvement opportunities, the office seeks to provide services that assist students in their daily lives. Metro Transit, housing information and discount tickets "to the town" are available in the office, which is on the St. Paul Campus, Founders Hall, Room 201.

The Metropolitan Student Newspaper

The Metropolitan, Metropolitan State's award-winning student newspaper, serves as an independent student voice, informing students, faculty and staff of events and issues related to the university. It also serves as a forum for debate, available to all members of the Metropolitan State community.

Published monthly, The Metropolitan offers experiential learning opportunities in writing, editing, photography, production, public relations, advertising and management. Stipends are available.

The Metropolitan welcomes letters to the editor, commentaries, and creative writing and artwork.

Student Senate

The Student Senate provides students with official representation at Metropolitan State University. It is comprised of 15 degree-seeking students, each serving for one year. The benefits of Student Senate membership enhance the educational experience of the individual student. However, any student, whether a Student Senate member or not, can serve on committees and develop programs.

Student Senate serves as a communication channel for student concerns about financial aid, curriculum, facilities, legislative issues, diversity, student fee allocations, faculty, staff and university policies. Meetings are open to all students. The Student Senate meets on a regular basis on the St. Paul campus. Most meetings are on Friday evenings at 6:00 p.m. For more information about Student Senate, call 651-793-1554.

University Activities Board

The University Activities Board is a student committee that plans, implements and evaluates activities and events at Metropolitan State. Members of the board work with entertainment agencies, scout talent and assist in producing shows. Members are also invited to attend regional and national conferences dealing with campus activities.
